Be Full of the Word

Updated: Sep 3, 2019

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom..." (Colossians 3:16 NIV).

As children of God, the Word of God reveals that our spirits have been born again by the Word of God (1 Peter 1:23). This means that our spirits have the same life and nature as the Word of God, which carries the life and nature of God. So, our spirits are sustained and nourished by the Word of God just as our physical bodies are sustained and nourished by physical food and drink. The human spirit lives and is programmed by words. Just as there are healthy and unhealthy foods for the human body, there are healthy and unhealthy words for the human spirit. The Lord Jesus told us that men are not to live by food for the physical body only, but by every Word of God (Matthew 4:4).

Healthy words for the human spirit are the words of God because they are the wisdom, life and power of God; they program and direct you in the directions that God wants for your life and they minister life, health and strength to your entire being. All words that are inconsistent with the Word of God are unhealthy words, and so you must be diligent to protect your mind and spirit from them. Such words threaten to program you for failure in your life and, thus, cause you to obtain the wrong results. Someone once said, "There are no God-made failures, but there are man-made failures." How true this is! God doesn't want your mind and spirit to be programmed by the words of human wisdom, but by the wisdom of His Word. That's what our opening Scripture is telling us. It tells us to let the Word of Christ dwell—live—in us richly in all wisdom. In other words, "Be full of the Word of Christ; let His Word be your wisdom."

The Lord Jesus said, "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." (Luke 6:45 NIV). This shows you that the wisdom with which you act and speak is what you have stored inside you—the words, thoughts and mindsets that have been built and programmed into your heart (spirit) and mind throughout the years. Now, God wants you to be transformed totally by the renewing of your mind by His Word (Romans 12:2). He wants you to be full of His Word so that the things that come out of you are the good, beautiful and excellent things that are consistent with the life, character and nature of His Word.

God wants His Word to dominate our thinking and our lives. He wants the decisions that we make to be based on His Word. He wants the words that we speak to be based on His Word. He wants His Word to be our wisdom—the controlling force of our lives! His Word is the wisdom with which He created the world; it's the wisdom with which He functions and lives. Now, He wants His children to function and live with and by the same wisdom. How is that going to happen in your life? You will have to get full of the Word of God by reading, studying and listening to it frequently; until it dominates your thoughts, decisions and actions. You will then find that the Word of God is living, speaking and acting in you and through you!
