Put Away Childish Things

Updated: Sep 3, 2019

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things." (1 Corinthians 13:11 NKJV).

Children say, think and do the things that they do because of their mindsets. You may still be that little boy or little girl who has only increased in age and in size, but you can increase in wisdom too. Wisdom is more than having knowledge about this, or that. It is about how you think—your mindset; and how that mindset controls the things that you think, say and do. It is also the understanding of knowledge.

The results that you get in your life are highly dependent on the knowledge that you have in your spirit, and on your mindset. Your mindset comes from the things that you watch, read and listen to. It also comes from the people that you keep around you, listen to and allow to influence you. So, it's always important to know where and whom you learnt what you know from. It's important to know where and whom you developed your mindset from. You have to test the information and behaviour that you receive, and the person that delivers that information and behaviour to you. Is it true? Is it wise? Is it helpful and useful? Is it mature? Is he or she mature?

If the people that influence your mind are not mature in their thinking and ways, they will help you to develop a childish mindset and ways. The Bible says, "Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble." (Proverbs 13:20 NLT). Wise people will help you to develop the right thoughts, habits and mindset that will lead to success. Foolish people—people who think like children—will help you to develop the wrong thoughts, habits and mindset, which, in turn, would cause failure and the wrong results in your life.

Here are several childish mentalities that you need to be careful of: slanderous thinking, selfish thinking, violent thinking, hateful thinking, uncontrolled and unrestrained thinking, disrespectful thinking, unfaithful thinking, rebellious thinking, and all other thoughts like these. All of these types of thoughts are examples of behaviours and thoughts that God has deemed childish. So you have to learn to put them away and replace them with their contrary parts by studying and meditating on the Word of God frequently. God wants you to think and reason like He does, so put away childish things and become the man or woman God dreams for you to be as you allow Him to teach and influence you.
