Christianity: Not A Religion

Updated: Sep 3, 2019

"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10 NKJV).

So many people think and have been taught that Christianity is a religion. But Christianity isn't a religion. Jesus Christ didn't come into this world to start another religion. Neither is He one of the “religious leaders” of history or this world. In the opening scripture, He stated that He came to give life to men. He wasn’t talking to corpses but to people who were physically alive. This lets us know that the life that He was talking about was something different to the life they had.

Religion is where man believes there is a God somewhere and does everything he can to reach Him. In religion, man is working out how to get to God, how to serve Him, please Him and relate with Him. But true Christianity isn't like that at all.

Christianity is God reaching out to man and getting man to make contact with Him. Christianity is the life of God working and made manifest in the human person. This is why God sent Jesus: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). Christianity is God alive in a human person. It's God and man brought together to become one divine creation. It's the life of God functioning in a man.

The Bible lets us know that human beings, because of sin, became separated from God (Isaiah 59:2). But God sent Jesus Christ to reconcile man to God: “...God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting people’s sins against them [but cancelling them]…” (2 Corinthians 5:19 AMP). Now, when a person receives salvation—becomes a Christian—He becomes reunited with God. He is brought into a relationship and oneness with God. Jesus came to give us a relationship—a fellowship and oneness of life and spirit with God.

Christianity is the divine life at work in the human person. If you study Jesus’ life, you'll see that His life was far from ordinary. He lived a life that was beyond this world, and thereby giving us an example to follow. The beautiful thing is that He has made this life available to anybody who would believe in Him. He said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.” (John 6:47 NKJV). This is the life that God wants you to have and live.

To become a Christian is not difficult at all. All you need to do is to be born again. The Lord Jesus said, “…Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3 NKJV). This means that, if you’re not born again, you won't be able to participate in the kingdom of God; that is, to participate in fellowship and oneness with Him.

When you're born again, you're brought into oneness with Jesus Christ and once that happens, His strength will become your strength and His ability will become your ability, such that when you face any situation that’s not consistent with God's will and goodness, you can take advantage of your oneness with Christ and command a change.

The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new..” (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV). This is what happens when you become a Christian, your spirit is recreated with a new life and nature by God! I believe you'd like to have the divine life; the same kind of life with which Jesus walked this earth with. It’ll make you a  champion and blessing to your world.
